This piece was on view as part of the exhibition "Self-Detetmined- A Contemporary Survey of Native and Indigenous Artists." August 18-27 (the exbibit had an extension and ran through mid December) 2022. An artists reception was be held on 7-18-22.
This is the largest wall I have worked on utilizing my favorite art form. Style Writing is the most widespread art movement across the planet and Indigenous and Native Artists are significant contributors to it. This might be one of the largest pieces as well as one of the first pieces of Indigenous Style Writing painted for an exhibit INSIDE a museum space in New Mexico. For more details on the inspiration and ideas behind this work please see the photo of the label.
I want to give a heartfelt thanks to Danyelle Means, as well as Kiersten Fellrath for trusting me to elevate this sketch and transform this space.
Through this piece I also want to recognize the stewardship and connection of the Tewa people who, past and present call Santa Fe home. We need reminders of the ancestral and continued presence and survivance of Indigenous people.
Pilamaya to CCA Santa Fe for showcasing an incredible roster of artists!
True to the nature of Style Writing, this piece was painted over after the closing of the exhibition, this is why documentation of this art form is so important, as it is the only remaining record of what once existed.

made for the sake of making real art,
is a declaration of loveand guts."
-T. C. Cannon
The title for this exhibit came from this quote. T.C. Cannon was one of the greatest painters of the 20th century and was perhaps one of the greatest artists of all time. I had the good fortune to be invited to see all iterations of the monumental exhibition "T.C. Cannon: At the Edge of America" which was organized by the Peabody Essex Museum and curated by the stellar Karen Kramer. Some of the absolute greatest moments of my life have revolved around Cannon's work. I was inspired back in 2002 when I saw his early student work at the Museum of Contemporary Native Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. These early paintings from his days at the Institute of American Indian Arts were brave, bold and experimental. This has been a template that I have diligently followed since I encountered those pieces all those years ago. It was simply a matter of time for me to use these striking words as an apt title for a solo show of my work. The title is also a nod to all those incredible moments that unfolded in front of Cannon's paintings.
The pieces were on view at the DIY space La Chancla, a DIY space in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Located in the historic Barelas Neighborhood, La Chancla is housed in the same space that was once the Small Engine Gallery, a notable independent venue in Albuquerque. This work was primarily created during my time as a graduate student at the University of Oklahoma, from approximately 2018 to 2020. The process of working on a MFA can be grueling, one that forces an artist to challenge their methods and ideas. I was forced to consider where my work fits into a larger context, and to look inward, toward my family history. This history is loaded with artists, the predecessors who paved my way. People speak of “standing on the shoulders of giants.” I called these giants, Grandma, Mom, Uncle and brother. I also came to realize that there were giants at OU as well. Chief Terry Saul, Dick West Sr. and Oscar Howe all faced moments of a similar nature, having to find a voice and vision that met their moments in time.
What does this have to do with this body of work? Everything and nothing all at once. Care to say, each moment has a different context that shapes the meaning. My experiences in the 21st century can be wildly different from what Oscar Howe faced, and still there is overlap. Oscar Howe was able to call upon the art history of his Dakota people to create the intense abstractions that mistakenly are associated with Cubism. I have no doubt he was aware of the paintings of Braque and Picasso, but he found his voice looking at the painting traditions of his people. There is a bit of a chronological order to my paintings. In the beginning the Star Quilt motif led to a series of pieces I named “Stellar Regions” after the John Coltrane album of the same name. Lakota cosmology is tied to the stars as well. This is a direct reference to my late Mother Olivia Skenandore who was a Lakota doll maker. I introduced a symbol that was a stand in for my Grandmother Rose Kerstetter and her Oneida pottery. In one of the last pieces painted on large unstretched canvas, I added my interpretation of one of my Uncle Fritzes bronze sculptures, an expressionistic skull. To top it all off is a subtle nod to my late brother, anywhere you find Style Writing elements it is an artform we both loved. I had no idea that this work would eventually be a tribute to so many loved ones who have passed on.
The current global pandemic kept this work from being shown to all but a few, my MFA committee and one kind heart who took time to see the pieces in person (socially distanced of course). It was the opportunity of a lifetime to show this work in Albuquerque, a place where I spent much of my formative years. It was a special kind of homecoming, and to have had this work shown in an independent space made it doubly so. Many of those formative years were spent painting graffiti and murals, making public art, going to house shows, and spending countless hours in the underground playground that is Burque. This crazy city had been a hot spot of creativity, the indie art scene is a fixture of this deranged metropolis. My artistic practice was born in the streets of this city, so it was a special treat to share this work here.
I want to take a moment to thank and recognize the individuals who helped make all this possible. Thank you to my MFA committee, especially to Marwin Begaye and Jackson Rushing for their pointed observations and especially Marwin for all the laughter as well. Thank you to heather ahtone for all your kind words and for taking time out to help guide my thesis into something manageable, dare I say sensible. Wopila Thanka to my Mother Olivia, while she didn’t live long enough to see the show, I know she was with me. To my little brother Tatoka Fritz “Wezul” John Skenandore, we stay Ghetto Bombing forever. To my Grandmother Rose who recently returned to the ancestors, thank you for your love and for gifting all us grandchildren a love for our Oneida culture. Respect and love supreme to the Ray of Light that shone while all this work was made, your time and love was priceless. Huge big ups massive to Adri and Bethany, thanks for rolling the dice on hosting my work and for your absolute badassery. Pilamaye to all who took time to come to the opening or made time to see the show one-on-one. Finally thank you to my Pops, as well as my two kiddos you make all the madness in this world worth traversing.

This group of four Polaroid photographs are the first taken in what would eventually become an ongoing series. I am an avid, or perhaps addicted thrift store junkie. I found a Polaroid box camera at a Goodwill in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Around this same time I had a conversation about photography and had gotten the idea to do some documenting of the Native and Indigenous people who I know or run into at art events, exhibtions and related gatherings. Like many denizens of the 21st century, I had taken and had seen many Polaroid photos. I was also curious about the film itself, at the time I had heard it was being made again after being discontinued in 2008. This led me to watch the documentary "Time Zero: The Last Year of Polaroid Film."(2012) After watching this I had no idea how close we were to losing this ubiquitous pack film. I felt it was the perfect medium to document with. Another influence on my project was having seen the Photo/Synthesis exhibtion at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman, Oklahoma. I was struck by the power of Will Wilson countering the long-standing yet illusory notion of Native people being a part of the so-called "vanishing race." Agencey is one of the conerstones of the exhibit and directly influnced my want to create photos of Native and Indigneous people in casual settings, with no poses or studio sets. A simple reflection of the worlds we exisit in as contemporary people. The start of this photographic journey begain with these pictures taken of my good friends and fellow artists Jasmin Arriaga and Micah "Werewulf" Wesley. We spent many an hour and after-hour hanging out and talking about films and art. Later when I was accepted into the MFA program at OU, they both gave me good advice and dropped hints about the different professors and how to navigate them and their expectations. Micah is also an old friend who I met at IAIA. His friendship and help has been huge over the years, so it is great that he is part of the start of this series.Hoka Skenandorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16759973820384263862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8714955015879492865.post-20955191284651811542022-08-26T20:53:00.001-07:002022-10-29T18:34:03.820-07:00

This image is of my contribution to the latest IAIA Auction which was part of the exhibition "Making History 2022" the benefit was held to raise funds for IAIA student scholarships. This piece is a smaller version of the large silkscreened pieces that I created during my time as a participant in the Institute of American Indian Arts' Artist-in-Residence program in the fall of 2021. This small piece is a print mounted to a wood panel IAIA alumni were tasked with creating work in a specific catagory, I was placed with the "High Contemporary" group. I continued to use this image, which is a detail from the Lakota artist and warrior Red Horse's drawing of dead and dying horses at the Battle of The Little Big Horn. I feel a particular importance in using Lakota Art History in my work.

This is the front cover for the 2018 Native Crossroads Film Festival held at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. This cover art is an original artwork made of Jesse Ed Davis, OU alumni and one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Notable in the list of films that played were Rumble- The Indians Who Rocked The World as well as Raven by filmmaker and Humble homie Razelle Benally. Actor Gary Farmer once had a gallery in Downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico. I was fortunate to have caught his attention and he ended up giving me the opportunity to have my first solo exhibtion outside of IAIA. It was titled More Work from The Shadows of The American Dream. The above flyer featured a diptych from the show. In that time I earned a BFA as well as my AFA, this flyer and detail from a booklet are from the graduating class of 2005-2006. The title of the show was Form and was held on the main campus gallery which was then called the Primitive Edge Gallery.
My painting The Price of Freedom- The Human Cost is featured. I went through a Basquiat phase before I had any formal training and this piece is a reflection of that time period. Both it and another Untitled piece were sold from this exhibition to a private collector. In an effort to utilize this space and also leave a digital record of previous articles, flyers, announcements, et cetera, I am scanning and sharing images from my archive as it relates to my work. The article in this post is from the Oklahoma Gazette, dated July 20th, 2016. I was interviewed by Ben Lushen about the exhibition Savages & Princesses: The Persistence of Native American Stereotypes. One of my patintings was also featured in the article, a painted vinyl record from my ongoing series Heroes and Villains. At the time of this writing a new version of this exhibit is currently touring across the United States and was most recently shown at the Mississipi Arts & Entertainment Experience in Meridian, MS.

Edit: The venue changed names and has closed since the time of this writing. There was a small exhibition of works on canvas, as well as a full Style Writing production. Inside an enclosed/fenced off area the production had pieces that ended up being painted over. All of the later photos were taken in 2021.Hoka Skenandorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16759973820384263862noreply@blogger.com0
